With the weeks whizzing by it’s time to think and plan for the big winter tidy up.
Sharpen your snips and come along to learn what to do with summer flowering shrubs once they have finished.
We will focus on deadheading, renovating a shrub to remove dead wood and reshaping, reducing a shrub which has grown too large, light trims, autumn pruning of rose bushes to prevent wind-rock and selecting the leaders from the new growth and removing some old growth right at the bottom of climbing rose bushes.
Leading this hands on (if you want it to be) event is Philippa who has spent the last year working at Kincardine Castle Gardens and has just qualified in her RHS Level 2 Theory. Philippa’s passion runs long and deep, by her own admission gardening is in her DNA with various members of her family going back up the family tree being accomplished professional gardeners.
The morning will be relaxed, informative, practical, it can be as hands on as you want it to be, stand back and listen and learn or come armed with your protective gloves and get stuck in.
Below is a few of the actual plants we will be working on:-
Cornus (dogwood) : reducing the size and improving the shape
Clematis montana situated over a gate: annual cut-back to keep access free
Hydrangea: remove dead wood to refresh them
Shrubs lining a path: tidy up and cut away from the path
Cotinus: a light trim to reshape
Bush roses: autumn prune to prevent wind-rock
Climbing roses: select leaders from new growth and remove some old growth right to the bottom
